Prostate surgery

Prostate surgery

Usually, the indications for surgery for prostate growth are:

Acute retention of urine.
Recurrent urinary tract infections due to prostate growth.
Recurrent bleeding in the urine due to prostate growth.
Renal failure secondary to obstruction of the bladder by the growth of the prostate.
Bladder stones.
significant residue urine in bladder.
Quality of life affected by urinary obstruction symptoms.
Severe prostate symptoms that do not improve with medication.

Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP)

TURP is a minimally invasive endoscopic procedure for the treatment of obstructive prostatic growth or benign prostatic hyperplasia, that is, open surgery is not required.

It is done with a device called a resectoscope, which is a thin metal tube that contains a light and a lens. This passes along the urethra, where the urine comes out, until it reaches the prostate. The lens is connected to a camera that is projected on a screen which allows the image to be enlarged for greater precision.

Through the resectoscope, a special filament appears that generates energy and makes cuts in the prostate safely and with minimal bleeding.

After the procedure, a thin tube called a catheter is inserted into the urethra to pump lavage into the bladder and remove any small prostate clots and fragments that have been generated.

At Prostasur we use regional anesthesia, which allows the patient a speedy recovery and avoids all pain, allowing them to be discharged just the next day.

In Prostasur during the procedure, the patient does not experience any pain while it is being carried out and the placed urinary catheter is usually removed just the next day, returning to normal activities shortly.

It is recommended to avoid heavy lifting, strenuous exercise, and sexual intercourse for at least a few weeks to allow for a better and speedy recovery.

Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP)

The holmium laser is a surgical laser that has been found to be particularly effective in performing various types of urological surgeries including stones and prostate enlargement. In the case of HoLEP, the laser is used to cut and remove the bulky prostate tissue that blocks the flow of urine.

Patients requiring HoLEP surgery are usually patients with oversized prostates in whom transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) would require a long anesthetic time.

Unlike TURP, laser enucleation of the prostate requires general anesthesia. The patient is discharged from 12 to 24 hours.

Green laser prostate surgery (Greenlight)

GreenLight or green laser prostate surgery is a minimally invasive procedure where the prostate is vaporized using a high-powered laser. In this way, the enlarged prostate that is blocking the bladder can be opened. The laser vaporizes excess tissue using safe and precise pulses of energy. The blood vessels in the prostate tissue are also vaporized, so there is very little bleeding.

This procedure is ideal for not-so-large prostates, mainly in elderly patients or with coagulation problems.

One detail to take into account is that prostate tissue is not extracted, unlike TURP and HoLEP, so it will not be possible to analyze whether there is prostate cancer in the tissue worked on.

The procedure requires general anesthesia and the patient is discharged in just 12-24 hours.
